Admissions

The Department of Religious Studies offers the Ph.D. only. The M.A. may be earned during Ph.D. study (see Requirements), but there is no terminal M.A. program. We also do not offer an online only option and graduate students are expected to be on campus for their studies.

Admissions decisions are made exclusively by the Department of Religious Studies, in consultation with faculty from other departments depending on the student's subfield.

Applicants need not have an undergraduate major or minor in Religion but should arrive with significant background in the proposed field of specialization; they should also have begun significant study of field-appropriate languages.

Campus visits are highly encouraged either before application or at any point in the application process. Admitted students are invited to a recruiting weekend in March, when they will have a chance to meet with current students and both Department of Religious Studies and affiliated faculty.
